If you’re interested in making resin jewelry, you’re not alone. This unique craft has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why. Resin jewelry can be colorful, durable, and one-of-a-kind.
I have been creating with resin for a little over five months now, and I have already made some amazing pieces of jewelry and gained some helpful insight that I want to share with you today! If that sounds interesting, this is the blog post for you!
Here are 6 essential tips for making beautiful resin jewelry:
#1. Work in a well-ventilated area
Resin can give off fumes that can be harmful if inhaled, so it’s important to work in a well-ventilated area. Open windows and use a fan to circulate the air. I strongly recommend wearing a mask to protect your lungs, as well.
I also recommend wearing disposable gloves to prevent the resin from getting on your skin.
#2. Measure carefully
It’s important to measure your resin and hardener carefully to ensure a proper cure. Depending on the instructions pertaining to your specific resin, you will probably either use a digital scale or a measuring cup to measure your resin and hardener in the correct ratio. The instructions on your resin should tell you if it needs to be measured by weight or by volume.
You also want to pay attention to the ratio of resin to hardener stated in the instructions. For example, for the resin I use, the ratio is 1:1; equal parts resin and hardener. It is very important that you pay attention to your ratio and measurements, for that is one of the determining factors when considering if your resin will cure properly.
#3. Mix thoroughly
If there is anything that I have learned these past few months, it is that when working with resin, mixing it well is key. You want to make sure that you mix your resin and hardener thoroughly for several minutes to ensure the two components are fully combined. Use a stirring stick or spatula to mix the resin and hardener in a mixing cup until they are fully combined.

#4. Avoid bubbles
Bubbles can form in your resin as you mix it, which can create imperfections in your jewelry. To avoid bubbles, mix your resin slowly and carefully, and consider using a heat gun or torch to pop any bubbles that do form. After I pour my resin into a mold, I use a lighter to pop bubbles that form in my resin.
#5. Experiment with color
Resin can be colored with pigments, dyes, or even glitter to create unique effects in your jewelry. Experiment with different colors and combinations to find the look you like best! It is important, though, to not add too much pigment, as it will cause your resin to either take longer to harden, or not harden at all. Believe me, I learned that the hard way.
I enjoy adding simple things such as acrylic paint and glitter to my resin, but recently, I have started to experiment with alcohol ink and mica powder. It has been a fun experiment!
#6. Sand and polish your resin jewelry
After your resin has cured, you may need to sand and polish your jewelry to remove any imperfections or rough spots. Use a fine-grit sandpaper and polish with a jewelry polishing cloth or compound to achieve a smooth, shiny finish.
By following these 6 essential tips for making beautiful resin jewelry, you’ll be well on your way to creating unique and stunning pieces that you’ll be proud to wear or give as gifts! Remember to work carefully and take your time, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors and techniques. With a little practice, you’ll be making resin jewelry like a pro in no time!
