Whenever I order something online, I always enjoy seeing how it is packaged. To me, when an order’s packaging is pretty, it makes the business look more professional. Plus, it makes it more fun to open, too!
Today, I want to show you how I package my jewelry orders and hopefully give you some inspiration for packaging yours, too!
When I am packaging orders, I have three main goals:
Making it pretty and professional
When buyers receive their package, I want to make it fun by making their package pretty. My goal is to make opening their order just as fun as opening a present. You can make it look pretty by getting colored or patterned mailing envelopes, putting your products in cute boxes or pouches, and maybe by adding some fun stickers on the envelope, or even inside the package as a free treat for your customers!
When a buyer’s package looks professional, it really does reflect back to your business. A couple of ways to make your packaging look professional is by including a sticker with your logo on the mailer/box or inside the package. I would also make sure that you include a business card or two.
Keep the Contents Safe and Secure
Perhaps the most important thing you should consider when packing orders is making sure that the package will arrive safe and undamaged. There are a few very easy things you can do to make sure your package is not damaged in the mail.
- A bubble mailer can help a lot with the safety of your product. They have bubble wrap on the inside and should protect their contents very well.
- If you want to be extra cautious, you can tape your mailer shut. This may not always be necessary. though, because many mailers stay closed pretty well.
- If you are shipping a more fragile piece of jewelry, you can wrap it in extra bubble wrap or fun colored tissue paper before you put it in the mailer.
- It depends on what kind of jewelry you are shipping, but there are different ways to protect each type of jewelry. You can buy ring boxes for very cheap, which will protect the ring and also make it look more professional. You can buy cards for your earrings and necklaces which will keep them more secure.
- If you have many components to your order, you could put them in a small pouch. These come in many different sizes, colors, and patterns, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding ones that fit your needs.
Make it Personal
I think that one of the best ways you can encourage your customers to purchase from you again is by making each order personal to the buyer. One way you can do that is by writing a handwritten note to each of your customers. By name, thank them for ordering! Tell them how much you appreciate them buying from you! To me, the fact that someone is taking to time to write me a handwritten note would mean a lot. I would be more apt to purchase again, wouldn’t you?
Another way you can personalize your buyer’s order is by giving them free items. Maybe you can give an extra pair of earrings to your returning customers, or thank customers for ordering from you for the first time by giving them a discount on their next order. There are so many ways you can make a customer feel special and appreciated.
Consider Your Costs
Once you have an idea of what you will need to package your order, you might want to look at the costs of everything you need. I would calculate how much your packaging costs for each order, then add that into the cost of shipping that you charge your buyers. This way, you are not losing money.
How I Package My Orders (And the products that I use!)
Let me show you exactly how I package my orders. Let’s use earrings as an example.
First, I put the earrings on an earring card and inside its plastic sleeve.
Next, I write a note to the buyer on the back of a coupon that will give them 10% off on their next order from me.
Then, I put the earring package, the note/coupon, and 2 business cards inside a pouch. If the customer is a returning one, I will give them a free sticker with my logo on it. (I give customers 2 business cards so that the buyer has one for themselves, and so that they can give another one to someone else who perhaps commented on their jewelry, asked where they got it, etc.)
Next, I place the pouch inside a bubble mailer.
Lastly, I tape the shipping label onto the mailer. (I don’t have a picture of this step to protect the privacy of buyers.)
This is how I like to package my jewelry orders. There are so many different ways and I encourage you to find your own special one! Remember, you want to make the buyer feel like they are opening a present when they open your package.
