The world has such a specific idea of what it means to be beautiful, doesn’t it? I think that all of us, at some point in our lives, have fallen prey to trying to meet its standards. The thing is, though, God’s idea of what it means to be beautiful is so, so different than the world’s. That is what I am going to cover in today’s post!

Alrighty, let’s get started!
What God says about being beautiful vs. what the world says
As I mentioned previously, God’s idea of being beautiful is so different than the world’s idea. The world is all about looks. Pretty hair, pretty clothes, nice makeup, perfect smiles, the list could go on and on. It can be stressful trying to meet all of these standards so that we can feel loved and accepted by the world.
Thankfully, God’s idea of being beautiful has nothing at all to do with what’s on the outside. To him, it’s all about what’s inside. Let’s look at a few Bible verses on what God says about beauty!
1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
To give a little context to this verse, God had just told Samuel that David, a young shepherd, was the one that God wanted to be king. Even though David was not big or strong, God saw what was in his heart, rather than what was on the outside. David had a godly heart, and God exalted him for it when the world might have shot him down for his outward appearance.

Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
I think it is so perfect that there is a part in the Bible about beauty being fleeting. As humans, we naturally want to please the world and fit in. But, try as we might to change our outward appearance, beauty is fleeting and will not last. Beauty trends change, our bodies change; this is why we should work on our hearts, for everything we do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). If we fear the Lord and honor Him as holy, this verse says we will be praised for it.
1 Timothy 2:9-10
9 And I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes.10 For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.
I love, love, love these two verses! Verse 9 talks all about modesty. God wants us to dress appropriately, wearing decent clothes and not drawing attention to ourselves through our appearance. I think this applies greatly to all of us ladies now when it is popular to wear clothing that shows off our bodies. God reminds us in verses 9 and 10 that we should make ourselves beautiful, not by the things we wear or by the way we do our hair, but by the good, godly things that we do. That’s how we can be beautiful in God’s eyes.
The Potter and the Clay
Imagine you are a potter and you are working to make a beautiful clay pot. First, you formed it exactly how you wanted it, then painted your pot with gorgeous, vibrant colors. It turned out exactly how you had planned and in your eyes, your pot is perfect. Then, all of a sudden, your pot says to you, “Why did you make me like this? I am so ugly! I hate my form and I want to change these colors!” Wouldn’t that make you sad, considering you made your pot exactly how you wanted it to be and it is perfect in your eyes?

Isaiah 29:16 says: “You turn things around!
Shall the potter be considered as equal with the clay,
That what is made would say to its maker, ‘He did not make me’;
Or what is formed say to him who formed it, ‘He has no understanding’?”
God, our Potter, fashioned us exactly how he wants us to be. Your appearance is perfect to God and when we call ourselves ugly or question the way he made us, we are considering ourselves equal to God by questioning his perfect judgement. Even further, we are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). By not liking our appearance, aren’t we, then, saying the same thing about our God?
Work on your heart
We are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) by a powerful and perfect God who makes powerful and perfect decisions. We are His handiwork, created to do good works and fulfill His plan for us (Ephesians 2:10). God fashioned our outward appearance exactly how He wanted it to be. We don’t need the approval of the world because we know that our loving God made us in His perfect image.
Instead of stressing about how you look on the outside, worry about what’s inside, for that’s what matters to God. Work on growing the fruits of the spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Work on furthering your relationship with your loving Creator and spending time in His Word.
You’re already beautiful on the outside, show the world Who is living on the inside!
